Don't
just see the plays - investigate them! The Investigate
series are a innovative programme of events
is designed to encourage theatre goers to investigate
plays and consider the themes and issues raised
by them.
Who
Needs Socialism? will round off this Autumn’s
very successful INVESTIGATE strand. Building
on the challenges posed by Who Needs Writers?,
Investigating Three of the Best 24:7,
All My Children and Who Needs Translators?,
David Thacker will join with writer Ron Rose,
the cast of The Enemies Within and
some of the original contributors whose words
form the text of this groundbreaking piece of
verbatim theatre.
Who
Needs Writers? was hailed by David Edgar
as being one of the most important theatre discussions
he’d ever attended.
Investigating
Three of the Best from 24:7 was a interactive
analysis involving cast, audience and writers
of three new plays from the 24:7 Festival.
All
My Children was a courageous attempt to
allow opposing points of view to be expressed
in the context of a discussion of the line from
All My Sons, “Once and for all
you can know there’s a universe of people
outside and you’re responsible to it”
Who
Needs Translators? was a detailed analysis
of the responsibilities of actors, translators
and directors when presenting plays in translation.
25
years ago Margaret Thatcher declared war on
trade unions and socialism. Some of those involved
in this epic struggle reflect on what lessons
have been learned and consider whether the miners
were indeed, as Margaret Thatcher called them
– The Enemy Within.
Who
Needs Socialism will pull together many of the
themes and concerns: the responsibilities of
those who present verbatim theatre, the distinction
between art and propaganda, theresponsibilities
of the Octagon to its audiences and to the community
it seeks to serve.
Guests
of honour will be Mark and Doreen Jones, parents
of the young miner David Jones who was killed
on a picket line in March 2004.
The day will follow the pattern of
most of the previous events:
10.30Who
Needs Socialism? morning discussion
2.00
The Enemies Within - matinee performance
4.30
